IIM Calcutta student raped inside boys’ hostel, accused arrested!

A disturbing incident came to light on July 11, 2025, at IIM Calcutta’s boys’ hostel when a second-year male student allegedly lured a female student under the pretext of a counselling session. The woman was offered pizza and a drink, which she later realized was spiked. She lost consciousness and woke up to find herself raped inside the hostel, according to her complaint filed at Haridevpur Police Station. The accused, identified as Parmanand Jain, was arrested shortly after being detained by authorities.

This incident marks yet another campus sexual assault case, following recent reports from Kolkata, including a law college gang-rape and a trainee doctor’s rape and murder. The frequency of such crimes has intensified concerns about the safety protocols at educational institutions in the city. Investigators are examining how the accused could bring a stranger into the boys’ hostel without scrutiny and why hostel security failed to detect the unauthorised entry.

The BJP has criticised the West Bengal government, accusing it of neglecting women’s safety on campus. Police have launched a full investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing hostel staff, and reassessing institutional procedures to prevent a reoccurrence.
