In a major drug bust, Assam Rifles intercepted two individuals carrying large backpacks near Zokhawthar in Mizoram’s Champhai district. Upon noticing the patrol, the suspects jumped into the Tiau River and fled into Myanmar, leaving behind their rucksacks. When searched, the bags were found to contain 3,33,300 methamphetamine tablets approximately 37.5 kg valued at around ₹112.4 crore. The contraband was likely intended for distribution in Champhai town. The seized tablets have been handed over to the local police, and an investigation is underway to trace the source of the consignment and identify those involved.
This operation underscores the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking along Mizoram’s porous border with Myanmar. Assam Rifles continues to play a key role in intercepting cross-border smuggling, aided by coordinated patrols and rising intelligence-led vigilance. Similar operations in recent months include the seizure of meth consignments worth over ₹15 crore in Siaha and another haul valued at ₹173 crore, highlighting a persistent issue in the border region.
