China has broadened its visa-free entry policy to over 70 countries in an effort to rejuvenate its tourism industry and attract more international travelers. The announcement, made by China’s Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism, indicates a significant push to welcome global visitors in the post-pandemic landscape.
The expanded visa-free program applies to various types of travelers, including those on transit, tourism, or business visits. The goal is to streamline travel to China, encourage longer stays, and enhance people-to-people exchanges. The policy covers countries across Europe, Asia, and other regions, signaling China's openness to international collaboration and cultural exchange.
China had already launched visa-free entry for several nations such as France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Spain in recent months, with positive responses. The new expansion follows the success of these initial trials, which saw an uptick in inbound travel.
This move comes as part of China’s broader strategy to boost its domestic economy and reposition itself as a global tourism hub. Officials also highlighted that group tours from China to 138 countries have resumed, with ongoing efforts to increase outbound travel as well.
China is also working with airlines to restore more international flights and improve accessibility for tourists. The tourism ministry reported that nearly 13.1 million foreign tourists entered China in the first quarter of 2024, a significant increase compared to the same period last year.
