At least four people died and scores were injured Wednesday when Bangladeshi security forces clashed with supporters of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Gopalganj district, her ancestral stronghold.
Violence erupted as the student-led National Citizen Party marched to commemorate last year's uprising against Hasina. Pro-Hasina activists attacked police with sticks and torched vehicles, forcing party leaders to seek shelter under military escort. Authorities imposed an overnight curfew.
The interim government called the violence "utterly indefensible," while Hasina's banned Awami League blamed authorities for the deaths. Student leader Nahid Islam issued a 24-hour ultimatum for arrests, threatening further protests. The unrest highlights Bangladesh's deepening polarization 11 months after Hasina's ouster, jeopardizing hopes for democratic transition.
