On September 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of India’s trade policies, calling the bilateral relationship "totally one-sided" and labeling it a "disaster." In a post on Truth Social, he emphasized that while India sells large volumes to the U.S., American businesses have struggled to gain market access due to "the highest tariffs of any country." Trump pointed out, "What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us."
Trump noted that India recently offered to reduce tariffs to zero, but said the gesture was “too late”, stating, “They should have done so years ago.”
He also criticized India’s continued reliance on Russia for oil and military equipment, saying the country purchases “very little” from the U.S.
This renewed critique comes amid escalating trade tensions, with the U.S. having imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods.
