Farmer turns to hydroponics, gains wealth and energy savings!

Padma Suresh, a gardener from Thiruvananthapuram, transformed her compact 500 sq ft terrace into a thriving green haven home to over 200 vegetable plants, including cucumbers. She emphasizes how growing cucumbers at home, even in small spaces, can bring families closer to food and nature, especially engaging young gardeners.

Her child-friendly, organic gardening method includes :-

  1. Choosing a Sunny Spot: Cucumbers love warmth and light so any terrace or balcony with 6–8 hours of sun is perfect.
  2. Preparing the Soil Organically: Instead of chemicals, Padma uses vermicompost, cow dung, and neem cake kids can enjoy mixing them in and feeling the earthy texture.
  3. Planting in Small Pots or Grow Bags: This method fits limited spaces and allows each seedling its own spot. Sow seeds about 1–2 cm deep, giving them enough room to develop.
  4. Consistent Watering: Encourage a routine watering in the morning and evening ensures soil stays moist, nurturing healthy growth.

Cucumbers are fast-growing, low-maintenance, and yield delicious rewards within weeks making them an ideal starter plant that teaches responsibility, biology, and joy in harvesting your own food.
