The loss of hills and rivers for corporate growth in Gurugram!

The frequent monsoon floods in Gurugram are not simply weather events they are the predictable result of decades of unchecked urban expansion. Once protected by the Sahibi River, Aravalli forests, and a network of ponds and wetlands, the city’s natural drainage infrastructure has been systematically dismantled to fuel rapid development.
The city's topography situated between the Aravalli hills to the east and the Najafgarh drain to the northwest created historical gradients that facilitated natural water flow. Bunds and check dams from the late 19th century managed this runoff effectively. Now, urban sprawl has eroded that system, blocked stormwater channels, and converted natural buffers into paved surfaces.
Illegal mining and deforestation across the Aravalli range despite Supreme Court bans have aggravated environmental degradation, reducing rainfall absorption and accelerating surface runoff.
The consequences are stark: Gurugram, receiving moderate annual rainfall, is repeatedly inundated during even short downpours—a clear indication of structural and ecological neglect. Unless urban planning re-embraces natural water systems and enforces environmental laws, these floods will continue to drown the “Millennium City” in avoidable chaos.
