Kangana Ranaut, the newly elected Member of Parliament from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, has defended her controversial remark that she couldn’t release disaster relief funds because she has not been made a Cabinet Minister. The comment, made during her visit to flood-affected areas, had sparked criticism on social media and from political opponents.
Ranaut clarified that her statement was misunderstood and said it was simply her “way of expression.” She stressed that she remains committed to helping the people of her constituency and that being in or out of the Cabinet doesn't limit her intention to serve.
The BJP MP explained that her reference to the Cabinet was meant to highlight procedural limitations in releasing central funds and was not a complaint. She emphasized that bureaucratic processes often require specific portfolios or official roles to authorize financial aid directly.
Her clarification comes amid ongoing relief efforts in Himachal Pradesh, which has been severely affected by flash floods and landslides. Ranaut has been actively touring the impacted regions and has assured constituents of long-term support, including coordination with higher authorities for prompt assistance.
Despite the backlash, Ranaut remains firm in her stance, saying, “It was not a political statement, just a reflection of my commitment to do more once I have more responsibilities.”
