Even natural supplements come with hidden risks Turmeric, green tea extract, ashwagandha, and other popular botanicals are increasingly linked to supplement-induced liver injury (DILI), which in severe cases can progress to liver failure. The liver, essential for metabolizing these compounds, may be overwhelmed particularly when supplements are high-dose, poorly regulated, or combined with other drugs.
Research indicates that approximately 5% of American adults consume at least one potentially hepatotoxic supplement like turmeric or green tea extract in a 30-day period. Alarmingly, some consumers face serious health setbacks: one New Jersey woman nearly reached liver failure after taking 2,250 mg of turmeric far exceeding recommended amounts. Her case underscores how even “natural” supplements can pose real dangers.
Scientific evidence suggests that whole spices and moderate consumption as in food or brewed tea pose minimal liver risk. In contrast, isolated extracts or enhanced formulations (especially with absorption boosters like piperine) have been associated with liver inflammation and toxicity.
