Is Gen Z more lactose intolerant or just more aware?

Lactose intolerance has been a common digestive issue for centuries, but in recent years, there's been a noticeable increase in the number of Gen Z individuals claiming they can't tolerate dairy.

With plant-based milk alternatives booming and "dairy-free" lifestyles becoming more mainstream, one question arises: Is Gen Z truly more lactose intolerant, or is this a case of increased awareness and shifting dietary trends?

While lactose intolerance affects around 65% of adults globally, the prevalence can vary significantly by ethnicity, with higher rates observed in Asian and African populations.

Recent studies indicate that Gen Z, known for their diverse backgrounds and health consciousness, may be more likely to identify lactose intolerance. Approximately 30-50 million Americans are lactose intolerant, and this number is likely higher among Gen Z due to their increasing diversity.

Suprisingly, 49% of Gen Z feels "ashamed" to order milk in public, reflecting a cultural shift where dairy consumption is scrutinized.

Moreover, Gen Z's milk consumption has dropped by 20% compared to previous generations, as they gravitate towards plant-based alternatives. This trend is not just about intolerance; it also encompasses lifestyle choices influenced by social media and health trends.

Many in this generation prefer non-dairy options for ethical or health reasons, with 57% planning to reduce dairy consumption in the coming year.

While genetic rates of lactose intolerance haven't increased, the combination of better awareness, dietary shifts, and changing gut health may explain why it appears that more Gen Z individuals struggle with dairy. Some of them may be truly lactose intolerant, while others are simply opting for dairy-free lifestyles out of personal preference or health beliefs.
