A team of divers in Japan has discovered a new sea creature that looks just like a tiny panda skeleton! Named Clavelina ossipandae, it belongs to a group called sea squirts. This creature has white bands and black patches that give it a panda-like appearance. But what looks like bones are actually blood vessels in its gills.
It was first spotted by divers near Kumejima Island, and photos went viral on social media before scientists confirmed it was a brand-new species. The creature is only 20 mm long, but it plays a big role in keeping the ocean clean. It filters water, removes bacteria, and supports coral reefs.
Scientists still don’t know why it has panda-like colors-it might be camouflage, or just random pigments.
This discovery also highlights the power of citizen science, as divers’ photos helped researchers find and study the species. Genetic tests later proved it's different from any known species.
