In the lush Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, scientists have discovered two new frog species-Raorchestes jadoh and Raorchestes jakoid-that not only deepen our understanding of biodiversity but also honor local Khasi culture.
What makes this discovery stand out is how it blends science with tradition. Instead of giving the frogs Latin-based names, researchers named one after jadoh, a beloved Khasi rice-and-meat dish, and the other after jakoid, the Khasi word for “frog.” Both species belong to the Raorchestes genus and are known for bypassing the tadpole stage entirely.
These frogs were found in bushes and small trees near human settlements, showing their adaptability. However, their habitats are under threat due to deforestation and climate change. Scientists from Assam Don Bosco University, Help Earth, and Mizoram University used acoustic recordings, DNA analysis, and morphology checks to confirm the species.
By connecting the discovery to local language and food, scientists aim to inspire conservation rooted in community pride. These frogs aren't just amphibians-they’re cultural ambassadors in a rapidly changing world.
