Hidden in Mirzapur: The brand behind Rashtrapati Bhavan's luxurious floors!

Weaving together centuries of heritage and modern empowerment, Obeetee is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious handwoven carpet brands. Its story begins in the Mughal era - Emperor Akbar invited Persian artisans to India, whose survivors eventually settled in Mirzapur after a fateful attack in Gopiganj, cementing the region’s legacy in carpet weaving.

Flash forward to 1920, when three British entrepreneurs - F.H. Oakley, F.H. Bowden, and J.A.L. Taylor - launched a carpet venture in Mirzapur, naming it "Obeetee" using their initials (OBT). Over time, this brand wove its legacy into the fabric of Indian history - its exquisite carpets now grace the New Parliament building, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and Rashtrapati Bhavan, including a grand piece over 450 sq. meters with around 100 million intricate knots .

But Obeetee’s story isn't just about luxury - it’s about empowerment. Since launching women’s training programs in 2016, the brand has trained nearly 1,800 women weavers, offering them both financial independence and a skill to pass on .

Obeetee thus represents more than carpets - it is a living tapestry of cultural heritage, innovation, and social change.
