What started as a simple conversation with beggars on the ghats of Varanasi has now become one of India’s most unusual social impact movements. Former journalist Chandra Mishra founded “Beggars Corporation” with one bold belief - beggars do not need sympathy, they need opportunities.
Instead of encouraging donations, the initiative focuses on helping people earn with dignity. Beggars are trained in skills like bag-making, stitching, recycling fabric, and small-scale entrepreneurship. Many who once depended on alms are now running businesses, earning stable incomes, and supporting their families independently.
One of the most powerful ideas behind the project is its motto - “Don’t donate, invest.” Chandra Mishra believes long-term livelihood support can transform lives more effectively than temporary charity. The initiative also works with children from beggar families through its “School of Life”, where they receive education and skill training.
What makes “Beggars Corporation” different is that it operates as a profit-with-purpose model instead of a traditional NGO. Products made by trained workers are supplied to businesses, hotels, and companies, turning former beggars into entrepreneurs.
From the streets of Varanasi to national recognition, the initiative is challenging the way society looks at poverty, unemployment, and dignity.
