You check your bank balance and it’s lower than you expected.
You start replaying your spending in your head. “I didn’t even buy anything major.” Just food, a few cabs, maybe a couple of online orders. Nothing crazy. So where did it all go?
Here’s the uncomfortable part - this isn’t about money. It’s about the story you tell yourself about it. Most people don’t think they’re bad with spending. Because every purchase feels justified at the moment. “It’s just ₹150.” “I deserve this.” “It’s been a long day.” Individually, they make sense. But collectively, they tell a very different story.
And that’s where we start lying to ourselves. Not intentionally. But subtly. We ignore patterns. We round down costs in our head. We avoid checking totals because we already know it won’t feel great. So instead, we stay in this comfortable illusion that everything is under control.
The problem isn’t spending money. It’s the disconnect between what you think you’re doing and what’s actually happening. The moment you track honestly, even for a few days, that illusion starts breaking. And it’s uncomfortable at first.
But also freeing. Because now, you’re not guessing anymore. You’re aware. And awareness changes how you decide.
So maybe the real question isn’t “why am I always broke?” Maybe it’s… what am I not being honest about?
