Trump claims he convinced Coca‑Cola to switch its American formula from high‑fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to cane sugar, calling it “just better.” The company has neither confirmed nor denied the switch, instead hinting at unspecified “innovative offerings”.
Nutrition experts are skeptical. Cane sugar (sucrose) and HFCS are metabolized similarly: both are roughly a 50/50 blend of glucose and fructose, provide around 4 kcal/g, and behave nearly identically in the body. Registered dietitians warn that while HFCS might contain slightly more fructose (~55%), which can strain the liver, the difference is small and unlikely to yield meaningful health improvements.
Dr. Avery Zenker emphasizes that both sweeteners spike blood sugar and deliver “empty calories,” contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, and dental decay. Similarly, the American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar to ≤25 g/day for women and ≤36 g/day for men.
The change likely carries more economic or political motives than health benefits. Critics suggest it may advantage sugarcane importers and GOP-affiliated agri-businesses, while domestic corn producers express concern.
Ultimately, experts agree: whether Coke is sweetened with cane sugar or HFCS, moderation is key. Healthier alternatives like water, unsweetened tea, or fruit-infused sparkling water remain the smarter choice.
