Trump issued a dramatic ultimatum to Russia: negotiate a peace deal over Ukraine within fifty days—or face “very severe,” including 100% tariffs—and secondary sanctions targeting nations importing Russian oil. Trump delivered this warning while pledging a major shift in U.S. foreign policy: the deployment of Patriot air-defense systems and other advanced weaponry to Ukraine, funded by NATO allies, not U.S. taxpayers.
Markets reacted swiftly. The Russian rouble strengthened and the Moscow stock index climbed after the announcement, buoyed by the inclusion of a 50-day grace period. Meanwhile, global oil prices dipped slightly as investors weighed the likelihood of actual sanctions being imposed.
Ukrainian President Zelensky praised the move, while NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the arms deal as “very big,” reflecting a coordinated effort among European allies. Analysts caution, however, that Trump's record on enforcing such deadlines may undermine credibility.
