India clinched a heart-stopping six-run win in the fifth and final Test at the Oval, leveling the 2–2 series against England. That dramatic victory awarded India 12 crucial WTC points, elevating them into third place in the 2025–27 World Test Championship standings just behind Australia and Sri Lanka. England slipped to fourth, compounded by over‑rate penalty deductions.
By the latest reckoning, Australia hold a flawless 100 % with 36 points from three wins. Sri Lanka follow with a 66.67 % PCT. India now stand at 46.67 % PCT (28 points from five matches), while England trail with 43.33 % (26 points from five).
This is a pivotal moment for India’s WTC campaign. Entering the final Test under pressure, their defence of 374 was masterful, with Mohammed Siraj delivering the finishing blow. Their resilience under pressure not only kept the series alive but shifted momentum in their favour. The bold bowling display and young batting core have propelled India into serious contention for a spot in the 2027 WTC Final.
England, meanwhile, must improve over the rest of the cycle. Penalties for slow over rates have already cost them dearly. To reclaim the top two qualifying spots, they’ll need consistent wins and cleaner game pace. India’s climb into the top three signals a competitive WTC race ahead but qualification is still wide open as the championship progresses.
