Viral jaundice especially from Hepatitis A and E has risen sharply in children this monsoon season, with Delhi‑NCR hospitals reporting a 30–40% surge in cases, according to liver specialists. Children are particularly vulnerable due to poor water quality, sanitation lapses, and unhygienic food handling. Hepatitis E poses additional risks for pregnant women, while Hepatitis A remains more common in children under 15.
Symptoms typically include yellowing of skin and eyes, dark urine, pale stools, along with fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In infants, early jaundice (within 24 hrs) or persistent yellowing beyond two weeks may indicate pathological causes requiring prompt evaluation.
Diagnosis generally involves physical examination, bilirubin levels, LFTs, and possibly imaging to pinpoint causes like viral infection or bile duct obstruction.
Treatment varies based on the underlying cause. Most viral jaundice cases in children resolve with hydration, rest, and supportive care. However, severe or obstructive cases though rare may require hospitalization, IV fluids, or surgical intervention.
Experts emphasize prevention through vaccination (Hepatitis A & B), safe drinking water, strict hand hygiene, and careful food practices during floods.
Parents are urged to seek timely medical attention if jaundice signs persist or intensify to avoid complications like liver inflammation or failure.
