For decades, the ideal career path in India was simple: graduate, get a stable job, and climb the corporate ladder. But Gen Z seems ready to rewrite that script.
According to the GUESSS India 2023 report, nearly 70% of students plan to start their careers as employees, yet this number drops to about 52% within five years as entrepreneurial ambitions rise. Meanwhile, the share of students aiming to build their own ventures jumps from around 14% at graduation to nearly 31% over the same period.
So what is driving this change? Exposure to startup culture, entrepreneurship education, mentorship, and supportive policies are making business creation feel more achievable than ever.
There is also a mindset shift at play. Many students still value the security of a job early on, but long-term aspirations increasingly revolve around independence, innovation, and building something of their own.
This does not mean traditional careers are disappearing. Instead, students are treating jobs as learning grounds before taking the entrepreneurial leap.
The real story is not jobs versus startups. It is evolution. India’s youth are no longer satisfied with just finding employment. They are preparing to create it.
