The tragic collapse of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge in Padra taluka of Gujarat’s Vadodara district was caused by structural failure, according to a preliminary probe. Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel confirmed on Friday (July 11, 2025) that the collapse was due to the crushing of pedestals and articulation joints, critical components of the bridge's support system.
The disaster, which occurred on Wednesday, led to four vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar river, with 19 lives lost so far. One of the injured victims succumbed on Friday, raising the official death toll.
The state government has faced criticism over infrastructure safety and maintenance, especially since the bridge was not declared unsafe prior to the incident. Authorities have initiated a detailed technical audit of similar structures across the district to prevent future mishaps.
Search and rescue operations continue, with two people still reported missing. The incident has reignited concerns around bridge inspections and accountability for engineering lapses in public infrastructure.
