Stacy Andersen, a behavioral neuroscientist at Boston University, has spent over 20 years researching centenarians-people aged 100 and above. As co-director of the New England Centenarian Study, she’s interacted with hundreds of long-living individuals to understand the secrets of their extended lifespans.

Her key discovery? While genes do matter after 105, healthy habits are the true game-changer for living well into your 80s and 90s. Andersen practices what she preaches, integrating three powerful habits into her daily routine:

  1. Learn new things: She took up sailing to keep her brain active. Many centenarians she met started painting or music in old age.

  2. Stay physically active: Andersen does long hikes and treadmill workouts. Centenarians she studied lived independently well into their 90s.

  3. Prioritize sleep quality over quantity: Feeling refreshed in the morning is more vital than tracking sleep hours.

Her message is clear-live fully, stay curious, and keep moving. The secret to a longer life may not lie in your genes, but in your daily choices.
