Samay Raina apologizes in SC for disability mockery!

Comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina formally apologized before the Supreme Court of India on August 26, 2025, for having ridiculed persons with disabilities and rare disorders in his show India’s Got Latent. In his affidavit, Raina stressed that his intent was never to offend. He described himself as an advocate for inclusivity and expressed commitment to greater care and sensitivity in future performances.

Raina clarified that a clip involving a visually impaired individual often criticized as mocking was meant to be encouraging and was received positively, including a standing ovation in Mumbai. While defending his use of mimicry as performance, he acknowledged that such portrayals require social awareness and more thoughtful handling.

He also shared proof of his social commitment: donations totaling around ₹9 lakh and fundraising of over ₹23 lakh for various causes. The Court, meanwhile, directed five influencers including Raina to issue public apologies and asked the central government to establish guidelines censoring speeches that offend vulnerable groups across media platforms. Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi underscored that free speech does not extend to commercial content that disparages marginalized communities.
