A bird that can’t fly?

Meet the kakapo-a rare and unusual bird often called the “parrot that forgot how to fly.” Found only in New Zealand, it is the world’s heaviest parrot, with some weighing up to 4 kg.

Unlike most parrots, the kakapo cannot fly. Over time, it evolved in an environment with almost no natural predators, so flying was no longer necessary. Instead, it developed a heavier body, small wings, and strong legs that help it walk and climb trees easily.

This bird is also nocturnal, meaning it is active at night. It uses its wings for balance while climbing and can glide down from trees rather than flying.

However, this unique evolution became a problem. When humans introduced animals like cats and rats, the kakapo struggled to survive. Its inability to fly and its calm nature made it an easy target.

Today, the kakapo is critically endangered. Conservation efforts are helping protect and increase its population, making it one of the rarest and most fascinating birds in the world.
