In 2007, two struggling designers in San Francisco had a simple problem - they couldn’t afford their rent. Instead of giving up, Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky tried something unusual: they placed air mattresses in their living room and offered travelers a place to sleep along with breakfast.
They called it Airbnb. At first, the idea sounded strange. Why would anyone stay in a stranger’s house instead of a hotel? Investors rejected the concept, and users were hesitant.
To survive financially, the founders even sold quirky cereal boxes during the 2008 U.S. election. But the real turning point came when Airbnb focused on building trust through verified profiles, reviews, and better listing photos.
Gradually, travelers embraced the idea of staying in local homes. Today, Airbnb operates in more than 190 countries with millions of listings. What began with three air mattresses is now a multi-billion-dollar company that completely transformed how people travel.
