The narrative of Indian business is undergoing a seismic shift. While the "India" of Tier-1 cities has long dominated the spotlight, the "Modern Bharat" of Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns is now producing a league of entrepreneurs dubbed the "Kohinoors." These founders are characterized by their "Antifragile" business models—built on lean capital, deep community integration, and a focus on solving fundamental problems like credit access, agricultural supply chains, and vernacular education.
The Anatomy of a 'Kohinoor' Entrepreneur
The report identifies three defining traits of this new entrepreneurial class:
• Hyper-Localization: Unlike global conglomerates, these founders build products specifically for the "next billion" users, moving beyond simple translation to create solutions that respect local cultural and economic nuances.
• DPI-First Strategy: By building on top of India's robust Digital Public Infrastructure—including UPI, ONDC, and the India Stack—these startups are achieving massive scale at a fraction of the cost required a decade ago.
• Frugal Innovation (Jugaad 2.0): There is a renewed focus on profitability from day one. These "Kohinoors" prioritize sustainable cash flows over high "burn rates," making them highly attractive to investors in a cautious global market.
Why Bharat, Why Now?
The surge in Bharat-based startups is fueled by the democratization of high-speed internet and the "reverse migration" of skilled professionals who left metro cities during the 2020s to build in their hometowns. This has resulted in a decentralized innovation map, where cities like Indore, Coimbatore, and Ranchi are becoming hubs for specialized tech and manufacturing.
