Congress MP Shashi Tharoor lauded the codename "Operation Sindoor" for India's retaliatory strike on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, calling it "brilliant" for its emotional and symbolic resonance. Tharoor highlighted that the name evokes the image of a newly-widowed bride, kneeling and weeping by the side of her assassinated husband, emphasizing the cultural and emotional depth of India's counter-terrorist actions. He further noted that the fact that sindoor is blood red also sends a telling message.
Tharoor's comments reflect a broader diplomatic effort to convey India's stance on terrorism and its commitment to defending its sovereignty. He is leading one of seven all-party delegations formed to brief nations on India's message against terrorism. The delegations are visiting key partner countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Japan, to present India's position on recent events.
The government's decision to include Tharoor in the delegation has sparked political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Congress of selective enforcement and acting hastily. The Bar Council of India's chairman also criticized the arrest as a failure of justice and an assault on free expression.
