At the 2025 General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in Glasgow, delegates from 74 Commonwealth member countries voted in favour of awarding the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Ahmedabad — making India the host for the Games’ centenary edition.
Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the government described this as a landmark achievement affirming India’s credentials to organise world-class international sporting events. In his reaction, the Prime Minister expressed delight and said the nation is eager to “welcome the world,” underlining a spirit of unity and global sportsmanship.
The upcoming Games are expected to feature 15–17 disciplines, including athletics, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, boxing, gymnastics, and more — with scope for additional traditional or new sports as proposed by the host.
The decision is more than a sporting event: it will kick-start large-scale infrastructure expansion across Ahmedabad and surrounding regions — from upgrades in sporting facilities to improvements in transport, hospitality, and urban development. This not only promises a showcase of India’s organisational and cultural strengths but also huge employment, tourism and long-term benefits for sports development nationwide.
In sum, with 2030 Commonwealth Games headed to India via Ahmedabad, the country is positioning itself as an emerging global sports hub — ready to host multi-sport events with scale, inclusivity, and world-class standards.
