Newborn jaundice is a common condition where a baby’s skin or eyes turn yellow due to excess bilirubin in the blood. This can leave new mothers wondering - should they continue breastfeeding? According to lactation expert Parul Mudit Mishra, the answer is yes. In fact, regular breastfeeding (8–12 times a day) can help reduce bilirubin by encouraging more frequent bowel movements.
There are two types of jaundice linked to breastfeeding: breastfeeding jaundice (from not feeding enough in early days) and breast milk jaundice (linked to natural substances in the milk). Both are generally harmless. If bilirubin levels rise, doctors may recommend phototherapy - a safe treatment with special blue lights. Even during this, mothers can pump milk to maintain supply.
Jaundice may feel overwhelming, but it’s manageable with regular feeding and proper support. Breast milk remains one of the best ways to support your baby’s recovery and growth.
