In a landmark decision, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti will henceforth be observed as a public holiday across the national capital each year. Currently, on October 7, 2025, all Delhi government offices, schools, and colleges will remain closed in honour of the sage-poet.
At events held at the Delhi Secretariat, the New Delhi Municipal Council, and Shalimar Bagh, CM Gupta described Valmiki’s teachings as timeless and rooted in equality, justice and dignity. She also said that the government would back cultural and community organisations to promote robust celebrations of the occasion.
The holiday declaration aligns with broader observances in nearby states. Uttar Pradesh has also announced October 7 as a holiday for government institutions in recognition of Valmiki Jayanti. Delhi’s inclusion of the day in its official school calendar reinforces its elevated status in civic observance.
As the city prepares for processions, devotional programs, and tribute functions, the new public holiday aims to provide space for reflection on Valmiki’s legacy in literature, social upliftment, and spiritual thought.
