In a world where water scarcity is becoming a harsh reality—even in Indian metros like Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai—Akvo Atmospheric Water Systems provides a compelling alternative. Founded by Navkaran Singh Bagga in 2017, this Kolkata-based startup designs atmospheric water generators (AWGs) that condense moisture from ambient air, treat the collected water through multiple filtration stages and minerals, and deliver potable water without relying on ground or piped supplies.
Akvo’s machines perform best in humid environments—with one unit of electricity capable of producing up to 4 litres in optimal conditions; even in drier areas, output is meaningful (2.5 litres per unit). They are designed to run on conventional power, solar or diesel setups, making them suitable for remote or off-grid locations. The company has already installed more than 2,000 systems across six Indian cities and globally in regions such as the Gulf, South America and Africa—with over 100 million litres of water produced.
Akvo also emphasises sustainability—not just in its product but in business model and growth strategy. Operating with a lean team of 38 and no external investors, the firm uses a flexible “buy or BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer)” model for clients—lowering barriers for businesses to adopt their systems. As Bagga puts it: “The atmosphere does not discriminate; it holds water for all of us. The real question is whether we are ready to change how we access it.”
In short, Akvo’s story illustrates how innovative engineering can bypass traditional infrastructure—turning the very air we breathe into reliable drinking water—and offers a blueprint for decentralised, resilient water supply systems in water-stressed regions.
