India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, has ordered airlines to conduct mandatory inspections of fuel control switches on Boeing aircraft, including B787 Dreamliners and B737s, by July 21, 2025. The directive affects operators like Air India Group, IndiGo, and SpiceJet.
The order follows a 2018 Federal Aviation Administration bulletin about potential disengagement of fuel control switch locking mechanisms. Major global airlines including Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines have also initiated similar inspections.
The directive comes after fuel control switches on an Air India flight that crashed last month were moved from "run" to "cutoff" position moments before impact, cutting fuel flow to both engines. The preliminary investigation revealed both pilots were confused over the switch setting change.
