Day 2 of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s saw a familiar controversy take center stage: the poor quality of the Dukes ball. India captain Shubman Gill and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj were seen in an animated discussion with the on-field umpires, voicing frustration over the condition of the ball just 10 overs after the second new ball was taken.
The issue escalated when the ball failed the standard “hoop test,” prompting the umpires to finally replace it. This is not the first time the Dukes ball has come under scrutiny during this series, with players from both teams expressing dissatisfaction over its rapid wear and inconsistent behavior.
The incident disrupted the flow of the game momentarily and reignited discussions about the quality control measures in place for match balls in high-stakes international cricket. With bowlers heavily reliant on the ball’s shape and seam for swing and control, such inconsistencies continue to frustrate teams and fans alike.
