An Indian student from a tier-3 college recently rejected a lucrative internship offer from a US-based company, sparking debate online.
The student, offered a full-stack developer intern role with a stipend of ₹35,000–₹40,000/month and a promised ₹12 lakh/year full-time job later, was fine with working US hours.
However, he declined the offer due to one condition, keeping his webcam on throughout work hours. Calling it intrusive, he tried negotiating but the company remained firm.
He later sought advice on Reddit, wondering if he made a mistake, especially after friends said such offers are rare for tier-3 graduates. Reddit users were divided-some praised his stand on privacy, others felt he should’ve accepted the opportunity and left later.
The incident has raised questions about remote work surveillance and employee autonomy. It also highlights the challenges faced by students balancing dignity and opportunity in today’s job market.
