In a groundbreaking development, scientists have successfully transformed light into a supersolid state for the first time, combining two seemingly contradictory properties — the rigid structure of a solid and the frictionless flow of a superfluid. This achievement was made by researchers at Italy's National Research Council, marking a significant milestone in quantum physics.
The team accomplished this feat by manipulating polaritons — hybrid particles that emerge when photons (light particles) interact strongly with matter, such as electrons in a semiconductor. These polaritons were trapped within a microcavity using mirrors and cooled to extremely low temperatures, creating the right conditions for them to behave as a supersolid.
A supersolid is a rare and exotic quantum state where matter exhibits both crystalline order and superfluidity simultaneously. In this experiment, the polaritons formed periodic structures like a solid, while also demonstrating the ability to flow without resistance — a property typically seen only in superfluids like liquid helium.
This experiment not only pushes the boundaries of quantum mechanics but also opens doors to practical applications in quantum computing, precision measurement, and advanced materials.
