Multani mitti, or Fuller’s Earth, is a time-honored skincare remedy, celebrated for its oil-absorbing, detoxifying, and exfoliating properties. Dermatologists often welcome its use for oily and acne-prone skin—thanks to its ability to absorb excess sebum, unclog pores, reduce breakouts, and impart a natural matte finish. Its cooling effect also helps soothe inflammation and redness.
However, experts caution it can be harsh for those with dry, sensitive, or mature skin. Its powerful absorption may strip essential moisture, aggravate conditions like eczema or rosacea, and lead to flakiness or pigmentation. To minimize risks, dermatologists recommend using it only 1–2 times weekly, avoiding letting it fully dry on the skin, and following up with a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
Patch testing is essential—apply a small amount behind the ear or on the jawline and monitor for 24 hours. People with eczema, active wounds, or using acne-drying medications should skip it altogether.
On social platforms like Reddit, users share mixed experiences: while many with oily skin find it refreshing and pore-clearing, others report extreme dryness and irritation when misused.
In summary, Multani mitti can be a skincare hero for the right skin type—especially oily or combination skin—when used thoughtfully. But for dry, sensitive, or compromised skin, it's more of a hazard than a miracle.
