In a deeply troubling incident in Singapore, Jane Lee, owner of the Sumo Salad eatery in Holland Village, passed away unexpectedly on July 19, just 24 hours after publicly accusing her employee of fraud. According to her Facebook posts, Lee alleged that Sran Kiranjeet Kaur, an Indian national employed at the outlet, staged a slip-and-fall accident to file a fraudulent work injury compensation claim shortly before her contract ended .
In the post dated July 18, Lee described how Kaur performed normally around staff but limped in front of doctors. She claimed the incident was premeditated, with Kaur and her husband possibly coached by a legal firm to exploit Singapore’s compensation system . The Ministry of Manpower confirmed it is assessing the claim alongside the insurer .
Singapore Police have classified Lee’s death as unnatural and launched a thorough investigation . The sudden demise of a 48‑year‑old mother of two has shaken the local business community and triggered public debate on workplace fraud, small‑business vulnerability, and small-scale employers' reliance on formal insurance coverage.
This incident has prompted calls for clearer guidelines and stronger protections for small enterprises navigating employment figures and compensation disputes.
