In a swift humanitarian response to the escalating Iran–Israel conflict, India’s first evacuation flight under “Operation Sindhu” touched down early today at Delhi Airport, carrying 110 Indian students evacuated from Iran via Armenia .
The students, primarily from Urmia Medical University in western Iran, were escorted overland into Armenia before boarding the rescue flight organized by the Ministry of External Affairs. India’s diplomatic mission in Yerevan coordinated the operation, which is ongoing amid reports that thousands of Indian students and professionals still remain in Iran.
The evacuation follows weeks of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear installations, which have triggered panic among Indian nationals, many of whom reported hearing explosions and fleeing into underground shelters.
Indian authorities have activated emergency hotlines and asked citizens in Iran to register for evacuation. Students in Tehran described a pervasive atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, with limited communication access intensifying their distress.
“Operation Sindhu” marks India’s third such mission in under three years, following “Operation Ganga” in Ukraine (2022) and other emergency evacuations. Continued flights are expected in the coming days to bring more stranded Indian nationals home safely.
