Apple is finally making a serious move into the AI chatbot race. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant has quietly formed a secret team named "Answers, Knowledge, and Information" (AKI) to build its own AI search experience, similar to ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
This marks a major shift from Apple’s earlier decision to stay away from chatbot development. The AKI team is being led by Robby Walker, a former Siri executive who was reportedly frustrated with Siri’s slow progress. With this move, Apple is aiming to upgrade Siri and Apple Intelligence after mixed reviews about its Genmoji and Notification Summaries features.
Apple is also reportedly exploring partnerships with AI startups, including Perplexity AI, a company known for its AI-powered search engines. These collaborations could help Apple fast-track development and integrate smarter AI into its devices.
Though still in early stages, AKI’s work signals Apple’s deeper interest in competing directly with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft in the fast-growing AI space.
