Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad has launched a new initiative to reduce travel stress-a therapy dog program. Introduced by the GMR Group, this pilot project features four trained Toy Poodles that roam the airport’s departure terminals, offering comfort and emotional support to passengers.
These dogs are certified and accompanied by trained handlers to ensure a safe, hygienic, and peaceful interaction. The goal is to ease anxiety, especially for nervous flyers, children, and elderly passengers.
The program is currently operational Friday to Monday from 3 PM to 7 PM, in both domestic and international departure areas. Flyers are free to approach the dogs-or simply observe them from a distance-depending on their comfort level.
Early feedback has been highly positive. Passengers describe the experience as “soothing” and “unexpectedly joyful.” One flyer shared, “I was anxious before my flight, but petting the dog made me smile instantly.”
If the pilot succeeds, RGIA may expand the program across more terminals and timings, setting an example for other Indian airports to follow.
