Since Gen Z entered the workforce, there's been a buzz about their demand for boundaries, mental health prioritization, and sharp work–life balance. Yet many of these values mirror what millennials stood for a decade ago.
Both generations place a premium on well-being and flexibility, calling for hybrid schedules, mental health support, and respectful work cultures. A 2024 Deloitte survey showed both Gen Z and millennials prioritize these attributes, with many opting for reduced hours or wellness benefits over traditional rewards.
Similarly, the push for inclusive workplaces, meaningful work, and ongoing feedback is shared. Gallup research notes both Gen Z and millennials expect ethical employers, diverse teams, and development‑oriented leaders.
Where they differ is in approach: millennials often tolerated hustle culture - even side gigs - to chase purpose, while Gen Z has drawn firmer lines on boundaries and disengages from 'hustle' rituals. They're less likely to blur work and life and more likely to advocate for transparent policies and mental-health norms.
Other emerging traits - such as Gen Z’s “fawn” response fueled by social‑media anxiety, or the blunt style of their email signatures and out‑of‑office replies - reflect a generation shaped by digital culture rather than workplace norms.
In short, Gen Z builds upon millennials’ groundwork - but adds digital-era realism and stronger personal boundaries. Their values aren’t radical mutations, but the next phase of evolving expectations in a modern workplace.
