A 22-year-old Indian national, Legha Pawan, was sentenced on July 16, 2025 in Singapore to 35 months in prison after being convicted in the death of 33-year-old Jasbir Singh, a fellow Indian national. The fatal incident occurred on June 30, 2024, at Clarke Quay, during which Pawan, intoxicated, pushed Singh into the Singapore River. Singh fell, hit his head on steps, and drowned.
Originally charged with causing death by a rash act, the charge was later downgraded to voluntarily causing hurt resulting in grievous harm, with a second charge taken into consideration.
Court documents revealed that the act was unprovoked and Pawan fled the scene without assisting the victim. He later returned home before surrendering to authorities the following day.
Singh, a construction worker and father of two, had been walking by the river alone when the fatal push occurred. The sentence reflects the severity of the consequences of rash behaviour, particularly when alcohol and public safety intersect.
