In India today, landscape architects are not just beautifying gardens — they are rethinking how cities and nature should coexist. New design efforts go beyond ornamental lawns and decorative plants, focusing instead on ecological balance, native vegetation, sustainable water and soil management, and cultural context.
These professionals aim to create landscapes that respond to local climate, biodiversity and social needs. By using native plants, preserving natural land-forms, and integrating traditional knowledge, they seek to build green spaces that support urban ecology — manage heat, improve air and water quality, and offer meaningful public spaces for communities.
Rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all idea of “green,” these designs respect India’s diverse regional ecologies. Whether in humid coastal zones, dry interiors, or mountainous regions — the landscape proposals adjust to local environmental conditions. In doing so, they challenge the dominance of concrete and unsustainable development in cities, offering a model where urban growth and nature reinforce each other.
This approach reflects a shift: from seeing green spaces as an afterthought, to envisioning them as essential infrastructure — vital for climate resilience, cultural identity, and people’s wellbeing.
