When we buy a car, we often look at mileage, features or design. But the most important truth - how safe the car really is during a crash - is revealed only through Vehicle Crashworthiness and Safety Evaluation, the scientific process used in Bharat NCAP crash testing.
Inside Bharat NCAP’s controlled crash labs, engineers recreate real-life accident situations to understand how well a car can save lives. The process begins with a frontal offset crash at 64 km/h, where the car hits a fixed barrier. Adult and child dummies fitted with high-precision sensors measure injury levels to the head, neck, chest and knees. This indicates whether passengers can survive a serious impact.
Next is the side-impact test, where a heavy moving trolley strikes the car from the side to check door strength, structural rigidity and airbag timing. Many cars are also tested for pedestrian protection, studying how the bonnet and bumper affect someone struck by the vehicle.
Ultra slow-motion cameras capture every millisecond. Experts then analyse structural stability, airbag deployment, child-seat safety and overall injury risk. The final star rating reveals one critical truth for buyers - how well the car can protect your family in the moments that matter the most.
