India has just taken a big step in protecting its seas with the launch of Samudra Pratap, the country’s first pollution-control ship designed and built domestically in Goa. This massive vessel stretches over 114 metres and weighs more than 4,200 tonnes, making it the largest pollution-fighting ship in the Indian Coast Guard fleet. Unlike regular patrol boats, Samudra Pratap is crafted specifically to tackle oil spills at sea - stopping them early before they drift into coastal zones, fishing grounds, or fragile ecosystems.
Equipped with advanced skimmers, sweeping arms, and systems to contain and remove oil slicks, the ship can operate far offshore and stay deployed for long missions. It also features powerful firefighting tools, making it ready for emergencies at sea. With over 60% indigenous technology, the vessel marks a stride in India’s ‘Make in India’ journey and boosts maritime readiness.
Beyond environmental protection, Samudra Pratap will safeguard coastal livelihoods, help maintain clean beaches, and strengthen India’s response to marine disasters.
