U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel has accepted the conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, urging Hamas to embrace the proposal or face deteriorating circumstances. He emphasized that Qatar and Egypt will deliver the final agreement to Hamas, calling this the “best opportunity for peace”.
Trump framed the deal as a pivotal moment, warning that rejecting it would only exacerbate the crisis. The agreement involves the release of approximately half the Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and other concessions. While Israel has consented to the terms, Hamas has yet to respond, maintaining demands for full troop withdrawal and permanent cessation of hostilities—positions Israel rejects without Hamas disarmament.
Senior U.S. officials and Israeli representatives are intensively negotiating, with Trump planning to formally raise the issue during his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. He expressed optimism that an official agreement could be finalized within a week.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, significant hurdles remain. Israel insists Hamas must surrender its arsenal and dismantle governance, while Hamas remains firm on ensuring a complete Israeli withdrawal. The deal’s success hinges on whether both sides can bridge these fundamental differences before the ceasefire window closes.
