Today, 14 November, holds a special place in Indian history and memory. It is the birth-anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, born on this day in 1889 in Allahabad.
As a leader, he believed deeply that “the children of today will make the India of tomorrow,” and was affectionately known by many as “Chacha Nehru” for his warmth toward young minds.
In recognition of his legacy, India designated 14 November as Children’s Day (Bal Diwas) starting in the mid-1950s, thereby linking celebration of childhood with Nehru’s vision of nurturing and educating the next generation.
On this day schools across the country stage cultural programmes, games, role-reversals, and emphasise child welfare, education and rights - highlighting the fact that investing in children means investing in a nation’s future.
It is a moment to pause and remember: children are not just recipients of education, but bearers of hope, curiosity, and change. The day invites society to recommit to creating environments where every child has the right to learn, grow and thrive.
