On July 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh, who passed away at the remarkable age of 114 in a hit‑and‑run accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar district. Traveling on his daily walk, Singh was struck near his native village, prompting widespread grief across the nation.
In a post on X, PM Modi described him as “extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness,” adding, “He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.”
Known globally as the “Turbaned Tornado” and “Sikh Superman,” Singh’s storied career included completing marathons in London, Toronto, and New York well into his centenarian years earning respect for his physical endurance and mental resilience. His daily commitment to fitness and longevity stood as a lesson to younger generations, and his death has prompted tributes from multiple political figures, including Punjab’s Governor and Assembly, who recalled his vibrant presence and lasting legacy.
At 114, Fauja Singh left behind a legacy of inspiration, showing that age is no barrier to achieving remarkable goals and motivating India’s youth to embrace healthy living.
