The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, sought a formal response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding its directive mandating the display of QR codes at all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route. These QR codes are meant to reveal the names and identities of shop owners, a move the petitioners argue violates fundamental rights.
A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh issued the notice while hearing a plea filed by academician Apoorvanand Jha and others, who challenged the order on grounds of discrimination, privacy violations, and the potential targeting of minority-run establishments.
The petition highlights concerns over the selective application of the directive and the possible communal undertones, especially during a religious pilgrimage. The Supreme Court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 22, 2025.
The UP government has yet to issue a detailed defense but previously cited "transparency and public safety" as the rationale for the order.
