India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, after inside‑edging a yorker from Chris Woakes onto his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep. He immediately went into visible agony, removing his shoe to reveal significant swelling and bleeding, before being taken off the pitch on a golf cart.
Initial scans raised concerns over a metatarsal fracture. Former India coach Ravi Shastri noted that Pant’s grimace reflected severe pain and the swelling could worsen overnight. Ricky Ponting, reflecting on his own similar injury, warned that if the bone is broken, Pant will be sidelined for the remainder of the match - and possibly the series. England all‑rounder Liam Dawson also expressed concern over the severity of the injury.
India ended Day 1 at 264/4 but could be without their dynamic batter. With scans pending, BCCI and fans alike are anxiously awaiting confirmation on Pant’s fitness update.
